Scripture Reading: John 7:37-39 (KJV)

Jesus said: If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

MESSAGE

Have you ever been thirsty? For some of us, it may occur on a daily basis and often even feel thirsty several times a day. The first thing we do when we are thirsty is to run to get a cup of water to quench our thirst. God has given us a sense of physical thirst to let us know when our bodies need water because water is essential to human life. It is a medical fact that water is extremely essential for us to maintenance our body because water breaks up and softens the food we eat. Our blood, which is 90% water, carries the nutrients of that food to all the cells in our body. Water regulates our body’s temperature at right level through perspiration. Without water which has lubricating qualities, our joints in our bodies would creak like an old, rusty iron gate and no one wants that to happen.

It is a scientific fact that without water, there will be no live. One of the things that scientists are looking for when exploring for living organism is to look for signs of water whether in the form of liquid, vapour or solid ice. It may be a simple chemical structure consisting of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, but water is absolutely essential for all living things. Unfortunately, now fresh water has become a very scarce natural resource. This is due to pollution in the rivers and lakes and as the result all countries will need to build giant water filtration system to clean the water to supply to homes so that people can use. And this is not free. You have to pay for it and it is not cheap.

In this passage of Scripture, John 7:37-39, the Lord Jesus told to the crowd who were listening to His sermon that, just as water is necessary for physical life, in the same way He and His words provide what is necessary for spiritual life. The water that our Lord Jesus Christ gives is a living water that is eternally energizing and will allow those who drink to live the life of God. What a gift of this living water! And we can have it because God has offered to us. All we need is to just accept this gift of life and it is freely given. Although Jesus told the people who were listening to Him two thousand years ago, He is still inviting each one of us to personally come to Him and He will satisfy the spiritual needs of our thirsty souls. There is no expiry date to His invitation to drink this living water. In verse 38, Jesus’ description gets even better and more amazing: “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture says, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”As a result of that coming to Him by faith, Jesus says that “out of his mouth will flow rivers of living water.” The “living water” is described as a river of water being fed by an overflowing spring of clear, clean, cool, refreshing water.”

The living water we drink will save us and fill us with His Spirit so that our lives might overflow as a witness to others of the saving power of Jesus Christ. We thus have the responsibility to tell people about this living water so that others can drink this living water which will quench their thirst unlike the water of the world.

Contrary to the world, many of us thirst after so many material things. There are those thirsting after money, fame, popularity and a host of many other things yet they will not be quenched. In fact, people who drink this water of the world will thirst more and more and they can never satisfy with those material possessions. The world offers many worldly oasis in this dry thirsty world in the form of material things. But the thirst for these material things always returns for them to crave for more and because it’s so captivating that we want more and more to satisfy our desires. This worldly water is addictive and it will lead us into deep trouble like we may go and steal or cheat money from people just to buy things that we cannot afford. Thus, it may lead us running into deep water!

Let us pray:

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for the gift of the Living Water that You are offering to us and we can freely drink of it. We know Father that the Living Water we drink will quench our thirst unlike the water we drink from the world. Father, help me to humble myself under Your mighty wings that I may receive Your healing touch in mind, body, and soul. Please enable my soul to prosper that Your healing water of life may flow like rivers of living from me to others. In Your Mighty name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
